Want to Be a Digital Nomad? Here's How!

Full-time, traditional jobs don’t allow much time off for wanderlust; fortunately, today’s gig economy provides unique opportunities for those wishing to travel. Digital nomads work remotely and can do so from anywhere that has a good internet connection.

If this idea interests you, you’re not alone. According to research, approximately 11 million Americans consider themselves to be digital nomads. So here are some tips, courtesy of GlobalNomad, to help you get started.

Travel on a Budget

Research before you head out. If you don’t own a vehicle, watch for deals on flights. Also, consider traveling by bus to new destinations.

For those who don’t mind driving, think about buying an RV. RV living offers total flexibility, so if you aren’t happy with the first city you visit, you’re not tied to a leased apartment. You will save a lot of money not paying rent and utility bills; RV campsites are widespread throughout the country and offer reasonable pricing that is much less than traditional housing costs.

Jobs for Digital Nomads

Internet-based jobs are abundant these days. Freelance writing, website design and maintenance, bookkeeping and customer service jobs are only a few. First, use a free resume builder to highlight your experience and get noticed. Then, search job boards for local or nationwide remote gig jobs to find a match for your qualifications and interests. You can also post your services and pricing on gig-based websites. This allows potential clients to find you easily.

Freelance Businesses

As a freelancer, you’re self-employed. You’re responsible for paying self-employment tax as well as income tax. Look into those amounts and price your services accordingly.

Consider forming a Limited Liability Company. An LLC offers tax advantages and flexibility. Each state has its own regulations governing LLCs, so check into your home state’s criteria. Although you can pay an attorney to form your LLC, it’s cheaper and easier to use an online formation service.

Rental Property Tips

If you decide to settle in an area at least temporarily, you’ll probably need to find suitable rental accommodations. Use rental sites that allow you to search for properties you can afford and that include amenities you need, including high-speed internet. Look for those that offer 24/7 customer service in case you have a problem.

Communicate Effectively With Your Clients

Whether you take freelance or other digital jobs, good communication with your employers or clients is crucial. The chances are that you haven’t and won’t meet them in person, and your digital presence shows them what type of person and business person you are.

Respond promptly to emails and inquiries in a friendly, business-like manner. You might be working with your laptop on a beach, but your contacts need to know you’re competent and reliable.

Invoicing and Payment

Digital money transfers are common these days, whether they’re money sent between friends or payments for goods or services. Although you can invoice your clients via email, some money transfer sites offer an invoicing option.
